Spiritual Support

Religion in the UK is very diverse and there are support groups and contacts widely available.

During the 2001 Census, 390,000 people registered their religion as Jedi after a campaign on the internet claimed - wrongly - that Jedi, the belief system at the heart of the Star Wars films, would receive official government recognition as a religion if enough people quoted it on their Census forms.

However, for those of us who follow an officially recognised faith, here is an overview of the spiritual diversity prevalent in the UK.

Christianity

Just over three-quarters of the UK population in the 2001 Census reported having a religion. More than seven out of ten people said that their religion was Christian (72 per cent).

Christianity in the UK is divided amongst several churches, including the Church of England, the Presbyterian church in Scotland, the Methodist Church, Baptist Church, United Reformed Church, Salvation Army, Quakers, Presbyterian Church in Ireland the Presbyterian Church of Wales and the Roman Catholic Church

Additionally, the Greek Orthodox Church has a presence in the UK. Please click here to find a Christian church near you. Please click here for the BBC's overview of Christianity in the UK.

Islam

After Christianity, Islam, revealed in its final form by the Prophet Muhammad, is the most common faith with nearly 3 per cent describing their religion as Muslim (1.6 million) in the 2001 Census.

For information on Muslim groups and activities please visit the Islamic Cultural Centre, The Muslim News and the UK Muslim Directory. Please click here for the BBC's overview of Islam in the UK.

Hinduism
A group of faiths rooted in the religious ideas of India, is the next largest religious group in the UK
(559,000).
