Travel by Rail, Coach & Ferry

Rail and coach travel is a relatively cheap way to travel across the UK, all of it is operated by private companies so you can find some good bargains depending on how, or when you travel. Ferries link the UK to the rest of mainland Europe departing regularly. Fog, now-days, no longer cuts off the continent, as the London 'Times' once reported in the old days of the British Empire!

Travelling by Rail

Rail travel can be a fast and efficient method of travelling around.

There is a substantial rail network in place across Great Britain, allowing access by train to most national destinations.

Fares can vary considerably in price, with a variety of ticket types on offer, depending on how soon in advance you can book your ticket and what time of day you plan to travel.

Railcards can also be purchased for use in certain situations which can result in discounted fares.

Planning your rail journey

If you are planning a train journey and wish to enquire either how to get there (do you have to change trains at all), which train company you will be travelling with, what ticket type is available and how much it will cost, you can:

  • Check journey details online and purchase at Qjump (online reservation service)

  • Phone National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950 (24hours)

Buying your tickets

You can purchase your ticket:

Travelling by Coach

National and international Coach travel is also possible by coach and is often a cheaper alternative to rail travel, although journeys will of course take a little longer.

National Express is a scheduled coach network, which serves around 1200 destinations throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

It also offers scheduled coach services to airports, and offers scheduled services to Europe  as well as day trips. Scotland is also served by Citylink.
